In “Plato’s Republic” book one, Socrates argues against Thrasymachus’s argument, “justice is the advantage to the stronger”. Thrasymachus’ claim was that full injustice is more beneficial than full justice is because it enables the unjust obtain enough. He claims that unjust individuals are always prudent and good. His claim on the just individuals is that they are naive and stupid. In his characterization of the just individuals, Thrasymachus uses three claims. He refers to just individuals as people who do not want to obtain the best of other just individuals1. The Blurring of Identities

As many of the Stories Old and New indicates, there is a growing trend of social boundaries beginning to blur. These cast systems, which, at one point in time, where set in stone, are now beginning to merge into a larger, single formation of the human race. Individuals are beginning to look away from the social norms and what their forefathers had once practiced, to a new day where society is far more open than ever before. However, there are individuals who still oppose and even oppress the merging and blurring of identities and social statuses, in the desire to maintain the ways of old. Yet, as many people indicate, life and people continue to evolve in the way they interact with one another, helping create a race of one and equal humans, instead of the separate and elevated former social status. Detroit was first settled by the French in the seventeenth century, who gave it its name. The city has undergone many transformations over the centuries as it developed from a small French fur trapping settlement into first the Paris of the West, and then into a booming metropolitan center that dominated the automobile industry. Over the years Detroit has been the home of many championship sports teams, host to important cultural events, and is the location of a number of beautiful and historically significant buildings. The city has been going through dramatic changes in the last several decades. It is no longer considered the Paris of the West; it is now considered one of the worst places to live in America. “Detroit is America’s most dangerous city, with 1,220 violent crimes per 100,000 people, according to violent crime statistics from the FBI’s uniform crime report, issued in 2008. Detroit or Motown, also boasts the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates in the country” (In, 1). People are leaving Detroit to find a safer place to live and better chances of employment. In spite of these challenges Detroit is a city that can be saved. The citizens of Detroit need to use their innovative approach to industry and their willingness to try new things to re-create their city. Continue reading →

Scott Fitzgerald examines concepts of modernity, and other concepts about development of American History in the publication, The Great Gatsby. The literature in this case reflects the theme of modernity through text that shows the development of new cities such as New York. Scott Fitzgerald’s book is a modernist piece of literature rich in information that builds understanding on development of cities, and the rise of modernity in history as depicted by characters within the book to represent the real life situation. Different forms of modernist literature have similarities; therefore, there are significant thematic relations between Fitzgerald’s work and that of other writers such as Virginia Woolf (Linda, 2000, p 10). The Great Gatsby gives information through narration on a historical, intellectual and cultural perspective, and the narration is in first person point of view. Continue reading →

My bioregional are is Chile. It is an area whose landscape consists of valleys and flat regions. It is a tropical area, experiences scarce rainfall. The area has arid, semiarid areas and the Atacama Desert. The area also has the Pacific coast ridges that are frequently covered in fog, which is caused by low decks of marine stratocumulus blown by the wind onshore. The area experiences shortage of water, which is caused by low levels of rainfall. The situation is made worse by the water code of 1981, which issues water rights to individuals. These means that an individual has access to water which they have rights to (Budds, 4). This mainly consists of the large scale commercial farmers, who have political connections enabling them to acquire water rights even in areas occupied by the peasant farmers. Politicization of access to water rights has led to the decline in the availability of water for peasant farmers. Similarly, large scale commercial farmers contribute to the inadequate water as they use pipes to divert water to their farmers for irrigation. Another issue that affects the availability of water is low temperatures, which leads to the low levels of rainfall and hence low water levels in wells and rivers (Garreaud, 193). Continue reading →
